WURLITZER STYLE 146 BAND ORGAN RESTORATION PROJECT (Part 1)
by Dr. Bill Black

In November of 2001 Dr. Floyd Moreland and I wrote an article describing an overall view of the restoration of the Wurlitzer Style 146 band organ located on the carousel at Casino Pier in Seaside Heights, NJ. This new series of articles will expand on that article with more photos of the project. To provide some context to this new series, readers should first visit that article in the archive section of this web site at www.carouselsonline.com/bblack/cpier_restoration.php.

The restoration project began in October of 2000. This series will mostly be a presentation of the photos that were taken during the restoration process. We wonąt go into great detail in descriptions since the basic restoration process is similar to that described in the 105 restoration series.

PHOTO A - The 146 on the carousel before the restoration.

PHOTO B - The 146 before restoration with the front removed. Note the case extension for the front in order for the front to clear the bell unit.

PHOTO C - The organ has been disassembled, the bottom part of the case is removed and the case is upside down.

PHOTO D - The bottom skid board was in rough shape. A new one was made using tongue and groove lumber similar to the original construction. I made a dolly for the organ to rest on during the work so it could be moved around easily.

PHOTO E - The organ base joints were all coming apart so the base parts were taken apart and reglued. The base is screwed to the skid board. The bottom pipework has been removed from the bottom board. These parts have been cleaned of old finish. You can see the outlines of the bottom pipes on the board.

PHOTO F - The vertical channel board has also been cleaned and checked for any crossover leaks. The channel board has been attached to the bottom board.

PHOTO G - The bottom board and the channel board are attached to the case which is shown upside down. Most of the old finish has been stripped from the case. The veneer is in bad shape with some missing pieces. We are planning to paint the case white.
