WURLITZER CALIOLA RESTORATION (Part8)
REPAIRING THE VACUUM PUMP AND RESERVOIR

by Dr. Bill Black

The vacuum pump is in good condition and will only need some repairs and cosmetic work. PHOTO A shows the vacuum pump removed from the Caliola. The top of the Caliola case is divided in two parts. The vacuum pump is attached to the back portion of the top. This allows removal of the pump from the machine without having to remove the whole top. In the photo, the pump is still attached to that portion of the top. The rod in the photo is the link to the roll frame to operate the flap valve to shut off the vacuum and mute the stack during the roll rewind.

In the case of the vacuum pump the valves are arranged so that they are external and accessible for repairs. We noticed that there was a piece of pneumatic cloth covering one of the corner joints in the cover. Probably a repair to a broken joint. Inspection shows a broken joint PHOTO B. This will be reglued.

In PHOTO C we have removed the covers over the valves. These will be checked for damage. PHOTO D shows that one of the flap valve springs is ready to break and a bit of pulling on it does produce a break in the spring. This will be repaired.

PHOTO E shows the repaired and refinished vacuum pump.

In PHOTO F the removed vacuum reservoir is shown. In the Caliola, this reservoir is not mounted on the vacuum pump but is placed on the side of the case. This is also in good condition.

When we remove the cover to gain access to check the springs we find a piece of newspaper glued to the lid (PHOTO G). Unfortunately there are no dates to see or clues as to where this newspaper was printed. Mainly just articles concerning Reducing or Maintaining Weight complete with recipes.

The reservoir will only need some cosmetic work. PHOTO H shows the refinished reservoir.
