WURLITZER CALIOLA RESTORATION (Part 17)
COMPLETION OF THE KEYBOARD UNIT

by Dr. Bill Black

Having finished the keyboard assembly work, we will now install the pipes. There are three ranks of pipes for a total of 44 pipes. The larger back rank is mounted on the windchest. The front two ranks are mounted on a riser which is mounted on the windchest. PHOTO A This arrangement allows for a pleasing appearance of the pipework layout.

In PHOTO B the finished pipework has been installed. These pipes were in excellent condition and only required some light sanding for clean up and a fresh coat of shellac for a new finish.

The vacuum pump for the Caliola is mounted on the underside of the top of the case. PHOTO C. The larger band organs usually have the vacuum reservoir mounted on the underside of the pump. In the case of the Caliola the case is smaller and there is not enough room between the top of the roll frame and the bottom of the pump.

In PHOTO D, the vacuum reservoir is mounted on the side of the case.

In PHOTO E, the bearing blocks and the crankshaft are on the bench for inspection. The large split gear is not the usual Wurlitzer gear. It appears to be a replacement gear fabricated by someone to replace the original gear as these are no longer available. The gear is in good shape and nicely fabricated. The gear and the bearing blocks will be cleaned up and used for the restoration.

Dr. Bill Black is one of the nation's most knowledgeble Wurlitzer band organ experts. He has made recordings of many band organs and other mechanical music machines which are available for purchase in our Gift Shop .
