WURLITZER CALIOLA RESTORATION (Part 13)
FINISHING THE PNEUMATIC STACK

by Dr. Bill Black

Next we will recover the stack pneumatics, glue them on the deck board and assemble the parts. In PHOTO A, we will check the fit of the joint between the deck board and the valve board. If any additional fitting is necessary it is much easier to do this before the pneumatics are glued on the board.

In PHOTO B, the old cloth has been stripped off and the wood parts cleaned and sanded. Several of the pneumatics were broken in removal and new ones were made.

In PHOTO C the recovered pneumatics are being glued on the deck board. The nail rail is temporarily positioned on the board to serve as a guide to the position of the pneumatic fingers so that they will line up with the push rods on the windchest.

PHOTO D shows the finished pneumatic stack.

Before installing parts in the organ it is always good to bench test these parts to check for problems. If it turns out there is a problem you may need to remove them anyway to trouble shoot the problem. To bench test the stack, we use a vacuum box with a vacuum gauge. The vacuum is set to about 22 inches. Each valve and pneumatic is checked one at a time for leakage and its performance.

In PHOTO F the stack is installed in the Caliola and the test is again run with the vacuum box to check the performance when operating with the windchest pushrods and pallets.

PHOTO G shows the restored stack completed and installed in the Caliola.
