WURLITZER CALIOLA RESTORATION (Part 21)
GEAR BOX AND MOTOR INSTALLATION

by Dr. Bill Black

In this case, the roll frame is in very good condition basically only requiring some cosmetic work. PHOTO A shows an earlier photo during disassembly of the organ of an on location repair made by someone. Rather than using a counter shaft between the motor and the crankshaft Wurlitzer used a gear box. This is rather heavy and is mounted on the back board of the case. This weight plus the added stress of the large heavy pulley on the gear box tended to loosen the screws which hold the board on the case. As a repair, this plate was intended to reinforce the wood screws which were loosening. We will plug the old holes in the case and relocate new screws in solid wood.

PHOTO B shows the inside of the back board which has a bearing block for the crankshaft attached. This serves for added reinforcement where the crank goes through the board. The clearance for the bearing is adjustable with an insert which can be screwed down on the crank.

In PHOTO C the back board is attached and the gear box is mounted. The top of the box is removed to expose the gear which has an oil bath.

A new motor is mounted on top of the case along with an off on switch and outlet. PHOTO D.

The keyboard has a cover which mounts around the keys. PHOTO E..
